The least you can spend and still get a metered whole-house system with a published capacity. It is not the most capacity per dollar, and for a large household it may regenerate more often than you want, but nothing else we track costs less.

Capacity is the thing you are actually buying, so price per grain is the closest thing to a value measure that does not require us to test anything. Worth reading alongside the salt column: buying capacity cheaply matters less if the unit is thirsty reaching it.

Largest published capacity
For a large household on very hard water, where a smaller unit would regenerate more than once a week. Bigger is not better by default: an oversized softener sits with water standing in it between cycles.

Highest manufacturer-stated iron limit
The specification that decides whether a softener survives well water. This is the highest figure any maker in our chart is willing to put in writing, which is a different claim from the highest a unit can handle.

Most completely documented, and certified
Every figure a buyer needs is stated, and the capacity claim carries third-party certification rather than the manufacturer’s own word. On a purchase where most makers leave gaps, being able to check the claim is worth real money.

Why there is no “best overall” here
Every other page ranking water softeners gives you a number one. Almost none of them has run water through the units. The rankings come from reading the same manufacturer pages we read, then adding a verdict that sounds like it came from testing.
The problem is not dishonesty so much as that the verdict does the reader no good. A single best pick has to assume a household size and a hardness level, and if yours differ the recommendation is wrong in a way you cannot see. A 32,000-grain unit that is perfect for two people on moderately hard water regenerates constantly for six people on very hard water, and the page that recommended it never asked.
So the order here is capacity first, then the axis you care about. Work out what your house needs, filter to units that clear it, and then choose on price per grain, on iron limit if you are on a well, or on how much the maker is willing to document. All three of those are things you can check without trusting us.
The pattern that surprised us
Going in, we expected the premium direct-to-consumer brands to publish more than the units sold in big-box stores. The opposite is true, and it is not close. GE states 16 of the 16 specifications a buyer needs across its units. The weakest, Aquasure, states 5 of 16.
The big-box brands also carry NSF/ANSI 44 certification far more often, which is the only figure in this entire category tested by somebody other than the company selling the unit. A premium brand asking three times the price while publishing no salt dose, no water per regeneration and no certification is asking you to buy on brand rather than on specification. That may still be the right call if the warranty matters more to you than the numbers. It should at least be a conscious one.
None of which makes the cheap unit automatically better. It makes the comparison possible, which is the part that was missing.

What is the best water softener?
There is no single answer, and any page that gives you one without testing is guessing. The right unit depends on your household size, your water hardness, and whether you are on a well. What we can tell you is which unit wins on each measurable axis: lowest price, lowest cost per 1,000 grains of capacity, highest published iron limit, largest capacity, and most completely documented. Size your household first, then pick from the units that clear that capacity.
Are expensive water softeners better?
Not on any measure we can check. The premium direct-to-consumer brands cost roughly three times the big-box units at the same capacity, and they publish substantially less specification. Several do not state salt per regeneration, water per regeneration, or a maximum hardness rating anywhere. What the premium price does buy is a longer warranty, often lifetime on the tank and valve. Whether that is worth the difference is a judgement about the company rather than the product.
What size water softener do I need?
Multiply the people in your home by 75 gallons a day, multiply that by your water hardness in grains per gallon, and size for roughly one regeneration a week. For a family of four on 10 gpg water that is about 21,000 grains a week, which points at a 32,000-grain unit. Our sizing calculator does this and adds the iron adjustment, since each 1 ppm of iron loads the resin like about 4 extra gpg of hardness.
Do you test the water softeners you recommend?
No, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. Every figure on this site is read from the manufacturer’s own published documentation, with the source URL and the date we read it recorded per unit. That means we can tell you what each maker claims and where they stay silent, which is genuinely useful and is not the same as a performance test. Where a maker publishes nothing, we leave the cell empty rather than filling it from a review site that did not measure it either.
